Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says the government will draw up a 10-year roadmap toward the country's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Kishida spoke on Wednesday at the first meeting of a council in charge of boosting green transformation. The attendees included Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hagiuda Koichi, who was tasked to take on the additional role of green transformation minister. Japan Business Federation Chairman Tokura Masakazu also took part. Kishida pointed out that Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered concerns over the possibility of an energy crisis. He said the government will aim to achieve carbon neutrality in the medium to long term while working to secure a stable energy supply. Kishida asked council members to study measures to support the introduction of renewable energy and help in adopting energy saving efforts. He also asked them to consider steps to encourage public-private investments worth 150 trillion yen or more than 1 trillion dollars over 10 years. Kishida said that implementing green transformation is one of the most important pillars for realizing a "new form of capitalism." He said the government will take measures to encourage public-private investments so that the goal of carbon neutrality will work as a growth engine to create a sustainable economy.
