Vietnamese woman prosecuted for smuggling drugs into Japan NHK

A Vietnamese woman has been indicted on charges of smuggling into Japan stimulant drugs with a street value of around 1.24 million dollars.

Customs officials and prosecutors say Nguyen Thi Chuyen brought about 3 kilograms of stimulants into Narita Airport, near Tokyo, from India on July 6. They say the illegal substance was hidden in shampoo bottles and food packages and was discovered in a luggage check.

Nguyen, 53, is a factory worker living in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan. Investigators say she asserts that she bought the shampoo and other items at a supermarket in India, and did not know they contained stimulants.
