Many survivors of Wednesday's magnitue-7.0 earthquake in the northern Philippines have been taking shelter outside their homes as tremors continue. Disaster management authorities say the quake hit Abra province on the northern part of Luzon Island, leaving people trapped under collapsed buildings or buried by landslides. Five of them have died and 131 others have been injured. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says that as of 4 p.m. on Thursday, it had recorded nearly 900 temblors with the maximum magnitude of 5.0 since Wednesday's quake. More than 860 buildings are confirmed to have been damaged. Many residents of Abra are taking shelter for fear that their homes may collapse. A man staying in a tent said he hopes the quakes will completely subside on Friday so that he can get back home. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited a stricken area on Thursday, and ordered government officials to do all they can to support affected people. But some road and bridge sections remain impassible in Abra and elsewhere, raising concerns that food and other relief supplies may not be distributed smoothly.
