Russia's Lavrov: Planning underway for phone talks with Blinken NHK

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says he is adjusting his schedule to hold telephone talks soon with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Lavrov told reporters in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent on Friday that he received an official request one day after Blinken announced that they would soon hold talks. He said Russia will soon propose a convenient date.

Blinken has said that he plans to discuss Russia's blockade of Ukrainian ports which is stalling exports of wheat and other grains. He said he also intends to broach the release of two US citizens detained in Russia.

Lavrov has indicated that he intends to talk about exports of Russian farm produce.

He said Russian ships are banned from entering various ports, and lamented that prior agreements are not being fully honored because of US sanctions.

This will be the first talks between the top diplomats of the two countries since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February.
