Pelosi announces Asia tour, without mentioning Taiwan NHK

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has officially announced an Asian tour, without mentioning whether she will visit Taiwan.

Pelosi said in a statement on Sunday that she will lead a delegation of five Congress members "to the Indo- Pacific region, including visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan."

The statement said the trip will "focus on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region."

There have been media reports that Pelosi's visit will include Taiwan, which drew opposition from China. She had refrained from confirming her overseas trip, citing security reasons.

China's Foreign Ministry said President Xi Jinping told US President Joe Biden during their telephone talks on Thursday that "those who play with fire will perish by it." The warning was about Taiwan.

But a senior US administration official said the two leaders agreed to try to arrange an in-person meeting.

Some analysts say if Pelosi visits Taiwan, tensions over Taiwan could suddenly escalate.
