The mayor of Hiroshima says he will call on the world to change the view that nuclear deterrence is necessary in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Mayor Matsui Kazumi on Monday said he will make the call in the peace declaration he will deliver at a ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing on August 6.

He said he will quote Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy to say that one should never intimidate others to push forward self-centered ideas.

Matsui said he thinks this year's peace declaration is more important than other years as there is a need to change the tide of people who support nuclear deterrence.

He said he will make a strong appeal, from a city that has experienced atomic bombing, that every effort must be made to realize a world without nuclear weapons.
