The mayor of Nagasaki City, western Japan, has revealed the main points of his peace declaration, which he will deliver at a ceremony on August 9, the 77th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the city. Taue Tomihisa told a news conference on Monday that he has been preparing the declaration based on discussions in a committee consisting of atomic bomb survivors and experts. The declaration points out that people should share a sense of crisis over the fact that Russian's invasion of Ukraine has raised the risk that nuclear weapons may be used. It stresses that eliminating nuclear weapons is the only way to remove that risk. The declaration also notes that the average age of hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, is over 84. It calls on the central government to step up its support for them and provide help to those who experienced the bombing. The mayor added that as of Tuesday last week, a record 94 countries had expressed their intention to attend this year's ceremony.
