Man infected with monkeypox dies in India NHK

Authorities in India say a man infected with monkeypox has died.

If the cause of death is found to be the virus, it will be the first fatal case in Asia.

The 22-year-old recently returned to the southern state of Kerala from the United Arab Emirates and died on Saturday.

State health officials say he tested positive for monkeypox in the UAE, but did not disclose that on his arrival in India.

Contact tracing of the deceased is being carried out, and many people have been quarantined.

The Indian government has set up a task force to fight the spread of the disease in the country.

India reported its first monkeypox case on July 12.

It has confirmed four cases so far three in Kerala and one in New Delhi.

The World Health Organization recently declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency.
