Media: Pelosi to visit Taiwan despite warnings NHK

The US House Speaker has started an Asian tour to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. Media report that Nancy Pelosi's travel could include Taiwan. Beijing has reacted sharply, saying it could threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

There have been no official announcements on Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. But Taiwan's local media report Pelosi will arrive in Taipei on Tuesday after visiting Malaysia, quoting from a diplomatic source.

And they say she would meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday. But the source says it is unclear whether Pelosi will land in Taiwan as scheduled due to a strong opposition from China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "It will be a gross interference in China's internal affairs" and "seriously damage China-US relations."

Zhao added, "If House Speaker Pelosi insists on visiting Taiwan, China will take resolute and strong measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Zhao also warned that "the People's Liberation Army will never sit by idly."

Pelosi visited Singapore on Monday. She met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Halimah Yacob. During the meeting, Lee "highlighted the importance of stable US-China relations for regional peace and security."
