China announces fresh military drills in response to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan NHK

China's military has announced that it will conduct exercises in waters surrounding Taiwan, following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

Shortly after Pelosi's arrival, the military's Eastern Theater Command said the drills will take place on the seas and in the air in six locations near Taiwan.

The military said the exercises include long-range live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency also reported that the country's military will carry out important exercises near Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday.

Chinese authorities are calling on ships and aircraft not to enter the areas designated for the exercise after Thursday noon, local time.

A spokesperson for China's defense ministry issued a statement late Tuesday night saying that the United States has sent the wrong message to Taiwan's separatist forces, and is escalating tensions in the strait.
