ASEAN will hold a series of foreign ministers' meetings in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh from Wednesday. Participants are expected to discuss possible responses to the situation in Myanmar.

The talks that begin on Wednesday will be ASEAN's first in-person meeting of their kind in three years.

A draft joint statement obtained by NHK calls on Myanmar's ruling junta to carry out agreements with ASEAN, including the immediate cessation of violence.

ASEAN did not invite the foreign minister appointed by Myanmar's military following increasing international criticism over its execution of four people. Among the killed was a former lawmaker who was a close aide to the country's ousted de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are among those scheduled to attend.

The participants are also expected to discuss issues such as China's maritime activities in the South China Sea and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
