The Okinawa Defense Bureau in southwestern Japan says a total of 22 KC-135 refueling aircraft have gathered at the US Kadena Air Base as of Tuesday.
The bureau said five of the KC-135 aircraft and eight F-15 fighter jets took off from the base on Tuesday night.
The flurry of aerial activity comes at a time when Taiwanese media say US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to arrive at an airport in Taipei soon.

Earlier, an EP-3 surveillance plane, which collects electronics data transmitted by military planes and facilities, was seen departing from the base.
China, which regards Taiwan as its territory, is fiercely against Pelosi's visit and has warned of powerful countermeasures if she goes ahead with it.
