Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has denounced US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan as a provocative action that infringes on China's sovereignty.
China's state-run Central Television reported on a meeting between Wang and foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Cambodia on Thursday.
Wang reportedly stressed the need for China to firmly resist what he called the reckless, irresponsible and irrational actions of the United States. He said, if Beijing does not react, separatists and extremists will intensify their action, and regional peace and stability will be seriously undermined.
Indonesia, whose foreign minister was among the attendees in the meeting, issued a statement expressing concern over rising tensions between the US and China over the Taiwan Strait and other issues.
Beijing apparently seeks support of ASEAN countries as its rift with the US widens. But differences are emerging among the ASEAN members in their stance against China.
