US-China tensions high over Taiwan at ASEAN meetings NHK

The United States and China have traded barbs amid heightened tensions over Taiwan following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit there.

The foreign ministers of Japan, the US and China separately met their counterparts from members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, on Thursday. They discussed Taiwan and other issues.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemned Pelosi's trip to Taiwan, calling it an act of provocation against China's sovereignty.

He emphasized that unless China demonstrates firm resistance, peace and stability in the region will be severely damaged.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said his country "continues to have an abiding interest in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait." He also expressed opposition to "any unilateral efforts to change the status quo especially by force."

Blinken's remarks came as Beijing conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan.

On Wednesday, ASEAN foreign ministers issued a statement in response to the situation surrounding Taiwan. It calls on concerned parties to "refrain from provocative action."
