A resort city on the southern Chinese island of Hainan has imposed lockdown measures to contain a recent surge of coronavirus infections. Chinese health officials had confirmed more than 400 cases of coronavirus in the city of Sanya between Monday and Friday. The officials say an Omicron sub-variant, which is believed to be highly contagious, has caused the outbreak. It's the first time the sub-variant has been detected in China. On Saturday, local authorities placed the entire city of Sanya under strict restrictions, only permitting residents to go out once every two days to buy food and other necessities. They are also allowed to leave their homes to undergo PCR tests. Chinese media reports say that about 80,000 tourists have been trapped in their hotels. It is unknown how long the restrictions will be in place. The lockdown in Sanya is the latest example of China's strict zero-COVID policy.
