China continues large-scale military drills around Taiwan on Sunday NHK

The Chinese military has continued its large-scale drills around Taiwan, in response to last week's visit there by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The military's Eastern Theater Command, which is in charge of the East China Sea, announced that it conducted joint combat exercises again on Sunday according to its plan. It says the drills focused on simulated attacks on land and tests of long-range strike capabilities in the air.

Taiwan's defense ministry said on Sunday that Chinese forces carried out exercises simulating attacks on Taiwan's main island and its navy ships at sea. Ministry officials confirmed multiple Chinese aircraft, vessels and drones operating around the Taiwan Strait.

The Taiwanese military said it dispatched aircraft and ships to respond "appropriately."

The Chinese military on Thursday began large-scale exercises in six maritime areas and airspace encircling Taiwan. Military officials said the drills would end by Sunday noon, local time.

Concerns are growing that China's military activities may become routine to put further pressure on Taiwan.
