Israel, Palestinian militant group agree to ceasefire NHK

Israel and a Palestinian militant group have agreed to a ceasefire after dozens of people were killed in exchanges of armed attacks since Friday.

The Egyptian-mediated ceasefire between Israel and the Gaza-based Islamic Jihad group took effect at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Gaza officials say 44 Palestinians, including children, were killed and 360 others injured in the attacks.

Palestinian militants responded to continued Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip by firing rockets into southern Israel on Sunday. But both sides appear to have stopped their attacks shortly after the ceasefire came into force.

Israeli media say Israel agreed to negotiate the release of detained members of Islamic Jihad under the ceasefire agreement.

Islamic Jihad is warning that it will resume its attacks if the members are not released.
