Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John dies at 73 NHK

Olivia Newton-John, the singer and actress who starred in the hit musical film "Grease," has died. She was 73.

Her family posted a statement on her social media saying that she passed away peacefully on Monday surrounded by family and friends.

Newton-John was born in Britain in 1948 and later moved to Australia, where she started her singing career.

The four-time Grammy Award winner was known for numerous hits, including "Have You Never Been Mellow" and "Physical." In 1978, she starred in the musical film, "Grease."

Last autumn, the Japanese government awarded her with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. It was in recognition of her contribution to the development of music culture in the country, and to friendship and goodwill between Australia and Japan.

Newton-John is said to have been battling breast cancer for more than 30 years. She actively promoted awareness and early detection of the disease.
