A magnitude 5.4 earthquake has rocked Japan's northern prefecture of Hokkaido. The quake struck shortly before 1 AM Thursday. It registered 5 plus on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7. The quake didn't trigger a tsunami. Its focus was estimated at a depth of 4 kilometers. Twenty minutes earlier, a magnitude 5.2 temblor was recorded in the same area. Hokkaido Electric Power Company says no abnormality was found at the Tomari nuclear plant in the prefecture. The Meteorological Agency is calling on people in the affected area to stay alert for strong tremors over the next week or so.
