US media have reported that Salman Rushdie, who achieved notoriety in the Islamic world for his 1988 novel "The Satanic Verses," has been taken off a ventilator and is able to talk after being stabbed in the state of New York. Media reported that the writer's agent confirmed that information but gave no further details. The Indian-born author was stabbed repeatedly during a literary event on Friday. The 75-year old novelist remained hospitalized on Saturday for injuries to internal organs and one eye. A 24-year old suspect has reportedly pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges. "The Satanic Verses" sparked outrage among some Muslims, who viewed it as blasphemous.
