Japanese retailers, restaurants offer better wages, bonuses amid labor shortage NHK

Retailers and restaurant operators in Japan struggling with labor shortages are trying to secure more workers by offering better conditions.

The operator of Chinese cuisine chain Hidakaya in the Kanto Region has been paying 500,000 yen, or roughly 3,700 dollars, to lure mid-career recruits since May. The allowance is paid in 12 installments to retain the new workers.

The company has also tripled the referral fee it pays to employees for introducing successful part-time candidates.

The operator's human resource manager says the firm is hiring workers so it can operate longer hours at existing restaurants and open new ones.

Fast Retailing, the operator of the Uniqlo and GU apparel chains, will raise hourly wages for irregular workers by 10 to 30 percent. It will decide the rate of increase based on local market conditions.

About 26,000 irregular personnel worked for Uniqlo stores as of the end of February. Fast Retailing says the wage increase will be applied not just to new hires but current workers.

The Family Mart convenience store chain has introduced an advance payment of wages for irregular workers.
