Two members of Japan's Diet will visit Taiwan from Monday. Former National Public Safety Commission Chairperson Furuya Keiji serves as chairman of a bipartisan group of lawmakers working to advance exchanges with Taiwan. Kihara Minoru is the group's secretary general. Both are members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Taiwan's foreign ministry says they are scheduled to meet President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President Lai Ching-te and other officials through Wednesday. The ministry welcomed the visit, and said it will further deepen friendly bilateral relations. The ministry also said democracies should band together "at a time when authoritarian states intend to invade and expand abroad, cause regional tensions, and challenge the fundamental international order." Earlier this month, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the most senior Washington official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. China responded by holding massive military drills around Taiwan, including ballistic missile launches. Another group of US congressional lawmakers visited Taiwan last Sunday. Taiwan attaches importance to diplomacy with lawmakers from countries with no formal relations, including Japan, the United States and those from Europe.
