A public elementary school will be installed in a new skyscraper in front of Tokyo Station.
Joto Elementary School will open on September 1 in the 45-story building in the Tokyo Midtown Yaesu complex.
The building, which has four underground floors, will also contain offices, shops and a hotel. It is built at the land plot where the school was originally located. The school currently operates elsewhere.
Reporters were allowed to visit the new facility on Monday before the opening.
Classrooms, a gym and other facilities are on the first to fourth floors. They include a playground with a retractable roof on the fourth floor. There is another playground and a vegetable garden on the fifth-floor rooftop.
School officials say they will put emphasis on math and science education, and will work with laboratories at Waseda University to conduct joint experiments.
They say the school had 50 students in 2008, when it was at the location. But they say the new facility is attracting more students, and over 160 will attend.
Kokubo Hideo, the principal of Joto Elementary School, said that he wants children to make use of the rich facilities and improve their abilities to think and express themselves.
