Anthony Fauci, the top medical adviser to US President Joe Biden's administration who led the country's response to COVID-19, says he will step down from his post in December. In a statement released on Monday, Fauci says he will also resign as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, or NIAID. Fauci advised seven US presidents since he became the NIAID chief in 1984 under the administration of then President Ronald Reagan. He helped his country to cope with various infectious diseases, including AIDS and Ebola. Fauci says in the statement, "While I am moving on from my current positions, I am not retiring." He adds, "I plan to pursue the next phase of my career while I still have so much energy and passion for my field."
