The Japanese government has again put off plans to expand its travel subsidy program nationwide amid the continuing spread of the coronavirus. The government on Thursday decided instead to continue the current subsidies for travel within each prefecture and nearby areas for another month to the end of September. The current program divides the country into six blocks and offers discounts to travelers going on trips within their own prefecture or block. Travelers also receive coupons that can be used to purchase souvenirs. The government had initially planned to introduce the nationwide travel subsidy program in early July with discounts of up to 60 dollars per overnight stay. Officials say they hope to launch this program as soon as the infection situation improves.
