Sony to raise price of PlayStation 5 NHK

Sony Group says soaring costs for parts have forced it to raise the price of its popular game console PlayStation 5.

Its subsidiary Sony Interactive Entertainment says it will raise the price in Japan on September 15 by 5,500 yen, or about 40 dollars. After the price hike, the conventional PlayStation 5 model equipped with a Blu-ray disc drive including tax will be 60,478 yen, or about 443 dollars.

The retail price will also go up in Europe, the Middle East and in China, but will remain unchanged in the US.

In addition to higher costs for parts and materials, the company cites the weaker yen.

Sony officials say the decision was unavoidable as the current global economic environment leaves many industries with no choice but to raise prices.
