US space agency NASA is set to launch a rocket carrying an unmanned spacecraft that will orbit the Moon as the first step in the process of resuming manned lunar flights after a 50-year hiatus. The Space Launch System, a giant vehicle 98 meters high, is due to lift off from Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida at 12:33 UTC on Monday. The SLS has been developed for the Artemis program, an international lunar exploration project that aims to send astronauts to the lunar surface by 2025. The aim is to put astronauts on the Moon for the first time since the age of the Apollo program. A space capsule dubbed Orion with three dummies inside is attached to the rocket. The capsule will loop around the Moon before returning to Earth in a 40-day test flight. Orion will collect data on such things as radiation that will be needed for manned flights. NASA says it is making preparations for the liftoff. The agency initially intended to send astronauts back to the lunar surface by 2024, but the development of the rocket was delayed.
