Russia's state energy giant Gazprom is suspending its supply of gas to Germany and France. Russian state-run media say the company is shutting down the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany for three days from 4 a.m. Wednesday, local time. It cites the repair of the single gas pumping unit remaining in service. Gazprom also halted supplies via Nord Stream in July. Even after the pipeline was reopened, supplies were cut to about 20 percent of the original level. Gazprom said on Tuesday that it will also suspend gas deliveries to major French utility Engie from Thursday, citing a lack of full payment for July. The Russian firm said the measure is in line with a presidential decree issued in March, and that the suspension will continue until it receives funds for supplied gas in full. European nations are alarmed over Russia's apparent use of energy as a weapon to counter international pressure over the invasion of Ukraine. Europe's natural gas futures have soared on concern that Russia may halt supplies over a prolonged period, fueling fears of a winter gas shortage.
