Torrential rain has prompted authorities to issue landslide warnings for the cities of Wajima and Suzu in the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa. They are urging residents to evacuate early and to keep updated with the latest information from local governments. Nanao City issued evacuation orders for 6,005 people in 2,391 households, while Suzu City ordered 1,630 people in 740 households to seek shelter. The evacuation order is Level 4 on Japan's five-scale alert. Weather officials say an approaching front has made atmospheric conditions unstable, causing thunderstorms, mainly in the Noto region on the Sea of Japan coast. The town of Shika had 36.5 millimeters of rain in the hour through 3 a.m. on Thursday. Hakui City had 30 millimeters of rain in the hour through 6 a.m. In the neighboring inland prefecture of Gifu, an evacuation order was issued for 12 households in Gujo City.
