Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed hope for closer ties with the United States on semiconductor production in a meeting with a visiting US governor. Tsai held talks with Arizona Governor Doug Ducey on Thursday. Ducey arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday for a three-day visit. World-leading contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, is building a plant in Arizona, where it plans to start mass production in 2024. Ducey praised the project, saying it will create 2,000 jobs in the state. Tsai said the project will be an indicator of Taiwan-US cooperation in the high-tech industry. She said Taiwan seeks to bolster cooperation with the US in the semiconductor and other high-tech industries, helping to build more secure, resilient supply chains. She added that Taiwan looks forward to jointly producing "democracy chips" to safeguard the interests of its democratic partners. Tsai also said pilots of Taiwan's mainstay F-16 fighter jets are training at a US air base in Arizona, apparently to stress Taiwan's security ties with the US. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei in early August drew angry reactions from China. Since then, three US congressional delegations and two US state governors, including Ducey, have traveled to Taiwan. expressed hope for stronger ties between Taiwan and the United States on semiconductor production.
