A team of nuclear experts has arrived at one of the largest nuclear plants in Europe after a harrowing journey. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency spoke earlier about the danger posed by fighting near the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said, "We have a very important mission to accomplish. As you know, we are going to start immediately an assessment of the security and the safety situation at the plant." Grossi said his team will spend a few days checking on the condition of the facility and its workers. He also said he hopes to establish a continued presence at the plant. Both sides of the conflict agreed to the inspection and the route taken by the outside team. But a Ukrainian governor says Russian forces shelled it. The Reuters news agency says that reports of fighting delayed the group for hours. Ukraine's state nuclear power company says a fresh round of shelling near the plant forced it to shut down one of the two operating power units. But Russia's defense ministry claims Ukrainian forces fired shells in a foiled attempt to recapture the plant. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said his country is doing everything it can to keep the facility safe. He reiterated a promise to let inspectors do their work.
