Tributes are pouring in after the death of Britain's longest-reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth, who sat on the throne for 70 years, died on Thursday at the age of 96.

The Queen was under medical supervision at her estate in Scotland, where she had spent most of the summer. Members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral Castle to be by her side.

Officials announced her death there on Thursday afternoon. Her son, Prince Charles, was next in line for the throne, and has now become King.

In a statement, King Charles the Third says this is a moment of the "greatest sadness" for his family. He says they are comforted by knowing the "respect and deep affection" widely held for the Queen.

The British prime minister hailed her as "the very spirit of Great Britain." Liz Truss said, "Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built. Our country has grown and flourished under her reign."

Thousands gathered on a rainy night in front of Buckingham Palace after the Queen's death was announced.

Many said they knew this day would come eventually, but it's still a shock.

A man in his 60s said that people are emotional because she has been with them all of their lives.

A woman in her 60s said, "Working for other people was her prime task."

Another man said, "I think she just ruled with humility, she brought everyone together. I think most people really appreciated that."

People will soon get a formal chance to pay their respects in London. Officials are planning a state funeral within the next two weeks at Westminster Abbey.
