The Japanese government has unveiled a plan to expand the scale of recycling and reuse in the country. This is part of its goal to achieve a carbon neutral society by 2050. The government roadmap includes a plan to double the amount of rare and other metals recycled from used solar panels and electronic products by 2030. The strategy also aims to double the amount of recycled plastic. The Environment Ministry hopes to expand the scale of the recycling and reuse market to over 560 billion dollars. It is currently worth around 60 percent of that amount. The roadmap also includes a target of cutting food waste by more than 1 million tons. The ministry plans to achieve this by introducing food drive programs for those in need. It will also promote the use of waste to produce sustainable fuels. The government estimates such efforts will cut domestic greenhouse gas emissions by about 36 percent.
