Stormy conditions are expected to continue on the Sakishima Islands in Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa, as the region is still within the storm zone of a powerful typhoon. Weather officials say Typhoon Muifa was located 60 kilometers north-northwest of Ishigaki Island as of 12 a.m. on Tuesday. The storm is largely stationary. The typhoon is packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour near its center, with peak gusts reaching 198 kilometers per hour. A gust of more than 140 kilometers per hour was observed on Iriomote Island at 8:15 p.m. on Monday. The Sakishima Islands are expected to remain within the storm zone until late Tuesday morning, as the storm retains its strength. Officials warn of winds powerful enough to topple homes until early Tuesday morning, with gusts of up to 144 kilometers per hour forecast in the Yaeyama region throughout the day. Seas around the Sakishima Islands will remain very rough, with waves expected to reach a height of 10 meters. Up to 50 millimeters of rainfall per hour is expected in parts of the Sakishima Islands on Tuesday. The Yaeyama region may have a downpour heavy enough to prompt authorities to issue a warning. Precipitation in the 24 hours through 12 a.m. on Wednesday is expected to reach 150 millimeters in some areas of the Sakishima Islands. The officials are urging people on the islands to refrain from non-essential outings and stay away from windows when indoors. People in the Yaeyama region are advised to be on the alert for landslides, floods in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.
