Preparation underway for the Queen's funeral at Westminster Abbey NHK

Security has been stepped up around the Westminster Abbey, where the state funeral for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is to be held next Monday. The Queen died last week at 96.

Starting on Wednesday, the Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall in the Parliamentary estate across the street from the abbey to allow the public to pay last respects.

Fences were put up on streets around the Parliament and Westminster Abbey on Monday to control traffic. Police were already patrolling the area. The abbey has been closed to tourists.

US President Joe Biden and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are among the dignitaries who have expressed their intention to attend the funeral.

Security is expected to be tightened further ahead of their visits.
