The head of the World Health Organization says the end of the coronavirus pandemic is "in sight." But he urged countries to maintain vigilance. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Wednesday that the number of coronavirus deaths worldwide last week was the lowest reported since March 2020. He went on to say that the world has never been in a better position to end the pandemic. WHO statistics showed that the global number of weekly deaths from September 5th to 11th declined 22 percent from the previous week to around 11,000. The UN health body also reported that new cases worldwide dropped 28 percent from the preceding week to about 3.13 million. But the WHO chief urged countries to stay alert, likening the pandemic to a marathon race. He said, "A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view." He went on to say, "She runs harder, with all the energy she has left... So, let's seize this opportunity."
