Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Nanmadol is moving north over the sea off the Ogasawara Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. The storm may approach Okinawa Prefecture, the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture and western Japan from Saturday through Monday. The Meteorological Agency says Nanmadol, spawned off the Ogasawaras early Wednesday, was moving north-northeast slowly at 3 p.m. on the day. The agency says the storm has a central atmospheric pressure of 994 hectopascals, with maximum winds of 72 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 108 kilometers per hour. It says Nanmadol is expected to move west as it develops, change its course to north and approach Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture around Friday. Fierce winds are forecast for Okinawa's Daitojima region from Friday and for Okinawa's mainland and the Amami region from around Saturday. Rough seas are also expected. The storm is expected to move further north and could approach western Japan from Sunday through Monday. Rain could intensify mainly in Kyushu and elsewhere along the Pacific side of western Japan from around Friday before the storm approaches. The agency is calling on people to pay attention to the latest weather information.
