Pope Francis appealed for peace and blasted the weapons industry in his traditional Christmas Day message on Monday.
                
Delivering his address to people gathered in the Vatican&#039;s St. Peter&#039;s Square, he referred to the fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
                
The Pope reiterated his urgent appeal for the liberation of those still being held hostage, and pleaded for an end to the military operations and the &quot;appalling harvest of innocent civilians.&quot;
                
He also called for humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
                
The pontiff pleaded for peace in Ukraine and said, &quot;Let us renew our spiritual and human closeness to its embattled people.&quot;
                
He also criticized the weapons industry for fueling the conflicts around the world, noting, &quot;To say &#039;no&#039; to war means saying &#039;no&#039; to weaponry.&quot;
                
The Pope asked, &quot;how can we even speak of peace, when arms production, sales and trade are on the rise?&quot;
