Japanese weather officials say a severe tropical storm, Nanmadol, is expected to move closer to Okinawa Prefecture and Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture from Friday through Saturday. The storm may approach other parts of western Japan by Sunday. The large storm could also affect eastern and northern Japan from Saturday through Monday. The Japan Meteorological Agency says Nanmadol was moving west slowly over the Pacific south of Japan as of 6 p.m. on Thursday. The agency says the storm has a central atmospheric pressure of 975 hectopascals, and winds of up to 108 kilometers per hour near its center. Winds of over 90 kilometers per hour are gusting within a 110-kilometer radius. Weather officials warn that Nanmadol could bring strong winds to places located away from the center of the storm. Fierce winds are expected in Okinawa, Kagoshima and other parts of southern Kyushu on Friday and Saturday. High waves are also expected around those areas. Rain could intensify mainly in Okinawa, Kyushu and other parts of western Japan. The agency is calling on people to pay attention to the latest weather information.
