The state funeral of British Queen Elizabeth II will be held in London on Monday. More than 2,000 people from around the world will attend the ceremony to pay tribute to Britain's longest-reigning monarch. The Queen died on September 8 at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She sat on the throne for 70 years. The funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey in central London from 11 a.m., local time. It will be the first state funeral in Britain since the 1965 ceremony for former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. During the hour-long funeral, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the principal leader of the Church of England, will preach the sermon and a two-minute silence will be observed nationwide. Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will be among the attendees. Local media are reporting that about 500 royals and leaders from nearly 200 countries and territories will attend, including US President Joe Biden. After the funeral, the Queen's coffin will be moved to Windsor Castle in a suburb of London, accompanied by King Charles III, Prince William and others. The Queen will be laid to rest beside her husband Prince Philip in a chapel at the castle. The British government has declared Monday a national holiday. Live viewing of the funeral will be held at parks, plazas and movie theaters across the country.
