Japanese weather officials continue to urge people in the southern region of Kyushu to be on high alert as powerful typhoon Nanmadol moves north over the region. Authorities have issued an emergency warning for southern prefectures due to an increasing risk of large-scale disasters that are seen only once in a few decades. The typhoon made landfall in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima on Sunday night. The Meteorological Agency has issued an emergency heavy rain warning in Miyazaki Prefecture. It also issued emergency warnings in Kagoshima Prefecture for violent winds and high waves. People are being advised to move to high ground or stay inside sturdy buildings. Violent winds are affecting almost all of the Kyushu region and parts of the nearby Shikoku and Chugoku regions. A construction crane tipped over in Kagoshima City. Heavy rain has been falling over a wide area. More than 900 millimeters were recorded in Misato town in Miyazaki Prefecture since Saturday. That's more than the average for the entire month of September. Nanmadol is expected to change its course and move eastward after passing through Kyushu on Monday morning. Bands of heavy rain clouds could develop over the Kyushu, Shikoku, Chugoku and Kinki regions. The agency is warning people to watch out for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.
