A senior Chinese official says the national security law for Hong Kong has helped lead the region from unrest to stability.

The deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Huang Liuquan, made the comment at a news conference on Tuesday.

Hong Kong officials have increasingly suppressed anti-government activities since the national security law was established in 2020, drawing criticism from western nations.

Huang said the law and revision of the election system provide strong assurance for stable and long-term implementation of China's "one country, two systems" policy.

Huang said the national security law for Hong Kong is no different from laws in any other countries around the world. He added that more than 70 percent of the respondents to a Hong Kong survey said after the law took effect security was restored and business improved.

The Chinese government apparently aims to stress the achievements of its leadership, ahead of next month's Communist Party National Congress. President Xi Jinping is expected to seek an unprecedented third term as party leader.
