Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio plans to call for strengthening the functions of the United Nations in his speech at the world body's General Assembly. Kishida flew in to New York on Tuesday. In the speech at the UN meeting, he will stress the importance of the rule of law in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He will also make his case for the need to boost UN functions, including reforming the Security Council. During his stay, Kishida is scheduled to attend a summit-level meeting aimed at putting into force the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. He will also deliver a speech at the New York Stock Exchange about his economic policies, including a "new form of capitalism." Kishida is expected to have one-on-one meetings with other leaders to bolster cooperation with countries that share values with Japan.
