South Korean military officials announced that North Korea launched a short range ballistic missile on Sunday morning.
                
South Korea&#039;s military officials said the short range missile was launched toward the Sea of Japan at around 6:53 AM on Sunday from near the Taechon area of North Phyongan Province in the country&#039;s northwest.
                
Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu said that if the missile reached an altitude of about 50 kilometers and travelled around 400 kilometers along the usual trajectory, it can be presumed that it landed outside Japan&#039;s Exclusive Economic Zone.
                
Hamada also said that the missile could have been a model capable of following irregular flight paths.
                
He said there have been no reports so far of damage to Japanese ships or aircraft.
                
Hamada said &quot; We strongly condemn the launch. It violates Security Council resolutions.&quot;
                
Sunday&#039;s launch is the latest in a string of North Korean missile tests.
                
North Korea fired a total of eight ballistic missiles in June alone from multiple sites around the country.
                
The North had been warning South Korea and the US that &quot;they will pay the price&quot; if they proceeded with their regular joint military drills. The US and South Korea went on with the drills anyway, from August 22 to September 1.
North Korea has been on edge over other US-South Korea joint drills scheduled to take place soon around the Sea of Japan.
                
The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan docked in the southeastern city of Busan on Friday ahead of the drills.
