South Korean military officials announced that North Korea launched a short range ballistic missile on Sunday. The officials say they are working quickly with the US military to gather information.
                
Japanese coast guard officials told NHK that what appeared to be a ballistic missile may have landed outside Japan&#039;s Exclusive Economic Zone.
                
Coast guard authorities say there have been no reports of damage to Japanese ships.
                
Sunday&#039;s launch is the latest in a string of North Korean missile tests.
                
North Korea fired a total of eight ballistic missiles in June alone from multiple sites around the country.
                
The North had been warning South Korea and the US that &quot;they will pay the price&quot; if they proceeded with their regular joint military drills. The US and South Korea went on with the drills anyway from August 22 to September 1.
                
North Korea has been on edge over other US-South Korea joint drills scheduled to take place soon around the Sea of Japan.
                
The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan docked in the southeastern city of Busan on Friday ahead of the drills.
