South Korea's Defense Minister has boarded a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier docked in the southeastern city of Busan.
South Korea's defense ministry says Lee Jong-sup inspected the flight deck of the USS Ronald Reagan, and toured other areas of the ship on Saturday. It says he was briefed on the warship's operational capabilities.
Speaking to officers on board, Lee stressed the strict approach his country is ready to take against North Korea, which is proceeding with its nuclear and missile development.
He noted that if North Korea plans to use nuclear weaponry it would face an overwhelming response from the South and the United States.
The commander of the carrier strike group, Rear Admiral Michael Donnelly, responded by saying that any provocation from North Korea would be met by the US and South Korea.
He said the two allies would win with overwhelming capabilities by further strengthening their combined operational posture.
Donnelly referred to US-South Korea joint drills to be held shortly in the Sea of Japan, and stressed the unity of US and South Korean militaries.
South Korea's military has been on alert for signs of North Korea preparing to fire a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
Such signs have been observed in the port city of Sinpho in North Korea's eastern province of South Hamgyong.
