Tokyo reports 5,621 new coronavirus cases on Sunday NHK

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials say they confirmed 5,621 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday. That's down 2,456 from a week ago.

The seven-day average through Sunday is 5,972.4, or 71.3 percent of the figure for the preceding week.

Nine people died after contracting the virus.

The number of patients with serious COVID-19 symptoms who are using ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines rose to 16, up one from Saturday.

As of 6 p.m. on Sunday, officials had counted 46,788 new infections nationwide. Forty-nine people died, and 239 patients are seriously ill.
