A powerful storm has unleashed strong winds and heavy rain in the Philippines. Typhoon Noru battered the capital, Manila, and northern provinces over the weekend, killing at least five people. Schools, government offices and the stock market were shut through Monday. Authorities say five rescue workers lost their lives in Bulacan Province as they tried to save residents trapped in floodwaters. A resident in the province said the water was waist-deep in the streets and inside his house, and many cars were submerged. At least six people were reported missing across the country. Nearly 80,000 people were evacuated from communities prone to landslides and flooding. The typhoon also disrupted public transport, with airlines and ferries forced to halt operations. On Monday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conducted aerial inspections of disaster-hit areas. He ordered officials to provide emergency power supply to two provinces north of Manila left without electricity. Meanwhile, in Thailand, heavy rainfall has hit the northern city of Chiang Mai as weather forecasters issued a country-wide storm alert. The rains collapsed part of an ancient wall in the city on Sunday. The wall built during the Lanna Kingdom in the 13th century is a tourist draw.
