US Vice President Harris arrives in Japan for Abe's state funeral NHK

US Vice President Kamala Harris has arrived in Japan to attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on Tuesday.

Harris flew in to the US military's Yokota Air Base in Tokyo on Monday. It is her first visit to Japan since taking office in January of last year.

The White House says the visit will "honor the legacy of Prime Minister Abe and underscore the importance of his leadership in championing the alliance between the United States and Japan and advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific."

Harris will hold talks with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio later on Monday to discuss the situation over Taiwan and Indo-Pacific issues.

Harris is to deliver an address at the US Navy's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, on Wednesday.

She will then travel to South Korea on Thursday, where she will meet President Yoon Suk-yeol to discuss North Korean issues.
