Myanmar's military rulers have been cracking down on influential pro-democracy celebrities. According to local media close to the junta, a court on Tuesday sentenced popular model Nang Mwe San to six years in prison for tarnishing traditional culture. She had posted social media photos of herself in a swimsuit, expressing support for democracy. She is in a Yangon prison after being detained last month. Meanwhile, a Myanmar beauty queen who denounced the military has arrived in Canada after recently becoming stranded at an airport in Thailand. Han Lay was staying in Thailand since March last year when she used a beauty-pageant speech in Bangkok to call for help for Myanmar. Last week she was denied re-entry. Thailand's Immigration Bureau told NHK that she left for Canada with assistance from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
